The Phillie’s won the world series – and the secular world rejoiced. Throughout the Tampa Bay Ray’s meteoric rise to the AL Pennant, the subplot of their removal of “Devil” from their name was always a nice humorous tidbit. But a part of me was really scared. I mean, what if exorcising the Devil was the secret to their success? What if the reason that the Yankees didn’t make the playoff this year was because he found a new favorite team? I mean – Tampa is full of old retired New Yorkers anyway. Could this mean the magic for the Yankees is over?

Well, the magic for the Rays ultimately ran out – and right before Devil’s Night. A coincidence? Probably….but perhaps the Devil did have something to do with this. After all, I’m pretty sure someone had to sell their soul to Satan for a team from Philadelphia to actually win…

Jordan Hasay didn’t make the Olympic team. Not that I can criticize, when I was sixteen years old I had no delusions about making the Olympic team. The Steve Prefontaine poster in my room notwithstanding, I knew that ultimately I would never have the work ethic to take what limited skills in running I had to any elite level. Jordan Hasay – with the long flowing locks that almost seem to outweigh her entire body – almost made the Olympic Team…

Hopefully it won’t be her only shot at it. Four years from now, she’ll still be an amateur college student. Will she still be at this elite level? Who knows – injuries, puberty, distractions – there are so many things that can derail an athlete. Still – this is my favorite part of the Olympics (or in this case Pre-olympics). Here is a young girl that went up against women – professionals. She held her own. It’s awe inspiring. Hopefully, she’ll be back…
