I too feel that the success (financially) of this film in the opening weekend will get Hollywood geared up for a sequel - even though the movie does not need one. I think to make it exciting, it will likely be a revenge alien invasion story. Like the Matrix sequels (which I feel were completely unnecessary and in fact made me not want to revisit the original for a while, so bad was the taste they left in my mouth), I think that they will financially do well, but will also destroy the goodwill that this first film left us with. I think that like Aliens, it will be more of an action movie and have a wholly different tone as well as director from the original.*

I can't personally say what I thought of the ending yet - I was late to the screening and missed the intro telling me exactly why the aliens were even on earth in the first place, and they way in which they told us. I will have to see it again, and that is something I am looking forward to. But I do feel that Christopher's relationship with his son and later promise not to leave the injured Wikas behind show his honest character. It could be interesting to see him help the humans in an alien attack, just as Wikas helped him.

* I really don't care much for the Aliens installment in the series. It's just a loud action movie (granted by a great Action director), whereas Alien was tense and psychological and something much more.

Its easy to get sick, vocal and upset about outrages in the human society when you are an observer, as the movie demonstrates through very clever mechanic of the forth wall and documentary style. When you are put in the shoes of people doing the day to day job of "fixing" and "helping" your mind, emotions and actions differ greatly. While I do not agree with the inhumane behavior we observe(d) through history and even today, I have a certain understanding that people on those situation get a pass. To put in the context of the movie, prawns did not land on earth by choice, and those who were rescued did not specifically understand and therefore unbalanced the social structure of Johannesburg, so Humans reaction towards citizens of District 9 is relatable, I do not think I would fare any better.

As far as sequel goes, the flower, the promise from Alien race's "leader" and basic wondering of what happens next is more than enough to continue this amazing story without additional sequel plague. Just like The Matrix needed a trilogy to explore the same motifs (human vs robots), this needs a closure. Terminator 2 was better than 1, Firefly series needed Serenity and District 9 will get District 10 to finish the story, its the question of When, not If.
